Biography
Scott Young makes and plays music from dub-soaked house, via broken techno and musique concrète. His tracks work the same way: slamming drums give way to tape-warped loops, field recordings and machine noise, with a dry humour and a streak of digital paranoia.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, he spent the 2010s between Berlin, Bristol and Manchester. His debut, Commix, came out on Samo DJ's Born Free in 2015. Homeless followed on Discos Capablanca, then Ket City, a white-vinyl edition of 30 launched with an instore at Sound Metaphors in Berlin. In Manchester he fell in with the Sferic, All Night Flight and Space Afrika orbit, and Black Lodge named him in a Visit Manchester interview for playing "really heavy weird techno". From 2016 he held an 18-month residency at Potato Head in Sai Ying Pun, playing its record library through vintage JBL monitors.
Selectors picked the records up early, with Ben UFO and Breach playing M.O.E.I. weeks before its release, and kept playing them, from Beautiful Swimmers, Paramida and Ben Sims to Trevor Jackson, Optimo and Lena Willikens, while Detroit Swindle and Viers took his tracks to Boiler Room.
Post Peace on OOH-Sounds built generative percussion in Max/MSP and FM drone around "Tuck", a reconstruction of the 2011 Hackney riots with Joe Beedles. As Satin Doll, the machine-learning album A Model Within on SUPERPANG morphed field recordings and shakuhachi through neural audio models, and Lee Gamble picked it for his 2023 Boomkat chart. He remixed Joakim's "Owling Gorilla" for Tigersushi (2022) and sang the Cantonese vocal on Samo DJ's 'LKF' (The Trilogy Tapes, 2016; CE Tape 2018 for Cav Empt). As Skully he cut dancehall edits for a 2025 split with Taymour on diy.
He played 宀 Club as Hong Kong's clubs reopened in July 2020, and in September 2021 co-organised Repo Populace with Xper.Xr at The Catalyst in Sheung Wan. He has played Griessmuehle, Macao, Forestlimit, Nyapi and Control abroad. In 2022 he premiered Compression Release Time, Rebecca Salvadori's film for his record Post Peace, with a live set at IKLECTIK in London. In 2026 he played Mitsuki in Tokyo alongside Compuma, and Bar Temp in Bangkok.
In 2026 he's back in the booth, and the sets run longer and stranger: clicks-and-cuts minimal bleeding into psychedelic disco edits and cosmic funk. He runs the tape label Less Loss, broadcasts on FM Belowground, and builds Acetate, mastering software shaped by years of listening for weight on club systems.
"It's more important to tell who you are via your music, instead of arguing on social media. Make more weird mutant music. Be brave and create your own world. There's nothing more interesting than that."
